Over many decades Adrian’s work has carried a fluid line, the poise of life drawing and the quiet presence and reflection of the artists studio, with glimpses that he allows us to share. Adrian’s work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions as well as being awarded Finalist in national awards including The Adelaide Perry, Kedumba and Dobell Drawings Prizes. His passion with books has further developed extension through his artists books, which are unique engagements with illustrated catalogues and responses of line and thoughts, and again his work in this field has gained awards and recognition including Manly Library artists Book Prize. His works have been acquired in major collections including NGA, New England, Laverty Collection and MONA Library.
I was born, educated and became an artist in Tasmania.
I started work at 15 as an artist with The Examiner in Launceston in 1963. A very influential mentor there opened up my mind to the world at large. Books, magazines and art from other places began to be part of my worldview. But I also began to see Tasmanian in a different way.
As a surfer, travelling every weekend and holidays around the state looking for waves, I got to know the island intimately.
The shape of Tasmania has become a symbol for me of my origin, a great start to life, and of the world as captured by Gustave Courbet.
This artists book with automatic, spontaneous pen drawings, springs from this well.
