‘It is the vast spaces of nature that perhaps provide us with the finest, the most respectful reminder of all that exceeds us.’ Alain de Botton.
Artist statement – Adrian Barber
Landscape painting allows me to maintain, develop and deepen my relationship with the world that exists beyond everyday concerns.
To experience the solitude, mystery and spaciousness of nature is a way to reach beyond the self.
The material for my paintings is primarily sourced from bushwalking close to home on the mountain, or further afield on extended trips. I am particularly drawn to emotive passages of light, the effects of cloud, lichen patterns on stone and the structure of mountains and rock. These are the subjects that will undergo transformation back in the studio, where I work full time.
I am also interested in the application of Eastern Philosophy and aesthetic principles to the craft of painting and to image making.
