About

David Hamilton’s practice includes sculpture, installation, drawing and digital media. His particular area of specialisation is metal casting as well as working in steel and wood, often in combination.

Hamilton likes the immediacy of steel and wood, and as part of this sculptural process he uses timber salvaged from the landscape, tightly wrapped, bound and knotted with hot steel sheet and rod. The resulting sculptures appear as enigmatic, artifactual objects from some ancient culture.

Hamilton maintains an ongoing concern related to the loss of Tasmania’s native old growth forests. As a consequence he often uses the axe, an efficient yet sensuous tool of destruction, as a metaphor in work related to this issue.

His present sculpture shows an ongoing interest in line as an art object. The forms are twisted and bound upon themselves and are analogous with processes most often associated with flexible linear elements such as thread or cord. The resulting sculptures appear like fragments or shards of some larger form.

In recent times Hamilton has become interested in how the fragment can act as a precipitator and initiator for ideas that extend the viewer’s imagination beyond the work. His recent PhD research Fragments: beyond the object focused on the temporal, spiritual and conceptual space that surrounds the physicality of the object.
