David Lake

Colour is the device which helps convey the richnes in David Lake's paintings.

About

David Lake’s paintings are full of light and vibrancy and convey harmony in composition and a depth often arousing surprise when viewed. The artist is inspired by the unexpected glimpse, usually beginning the ‘construction’ of a picture, the work itself arising from sketches around the subject or subjects, photographs and memory of particular light. There is an evolution through the building of each work.

The subject matter itself usually comprises some aspect of architecture, either real or imagined, as are figures, being significant to the theme of the painting. There is also an enjoyment of contrast both in tone and that of the natural with the made.

His style is that of a realist, however is in no way photographic. The work draws in the viewer to reveal a much enjoyed vitality.

A Glover Prize finalist on several occasions, Lake has also won the Tasmanian Art Award (2011), been selected for the Wynne Prize Salon de Refuses (2013) and has had work selected for the prestigious ‘by invitation only’ Tattersall’s Landscape Art Prize (2013, 2014, 2015). For the artist however ‘official’ recognition is secondary to the general enjoyment of it by a wide and increasing number of enthusiasts.

His pictures have sold Australia wide, to Europe and recently gained particular interest in Britain.

CV

Born Adelaide 1948. Works from home studio in Longford, Tasmania.

Sketched from early age. From 1964 served five year apprenticeship in Sydney as Lithographic Dot Etcher and Retoucher (soon to be defunct trade requiring fine brush work, knowledge of tone and colour relationship). 1984 – Initiated a NSW regional newspaper using illustration in preference to photographs. Advertisements were all drawn (having noted in earlier years that advertising agencies’ ‘artists roughs’ were more attractive than the final printed advertisement). He first put brush to canvas in Brisbane in March 2004 and though a little guidance was given by a Bosnian artist Alma Sarac, no formal art tuition has been taken. In the same year he set out to paint 13 portraits of people engaged in their occupations; In March 2005 he held his first solo exhibition ‘Fine Folk’. Then Qld Minister for Arts, Anna Bligh, took interest in the work and opened the exhibition. He is passionate about painting and when first engaged the choice was made to turn mind entirely to the craft. Within a short period painting became the only source of income. The only interruption to the pursuit of the work was during 2007-2008, time taken in order to self build cottage/studio.
