“A storyteller, I create images in the still life genre that explores the symbolic potential of objects as vessels for remembrance. Those treasured objects, mementos and souvenirs that are intimately entwined with the geography, history, culture and life experiences of the owners. When painted, the images become oblique portraits of the owners and act as aide-memoirs of other people, lands and journeys. Because the owners’ stories and objects are steeped in emigrational crossings and have been ever present in my life, I do not see that I will be free of working with them but rather they will continue to manifest in my paintings. A reciprocal arrangment filled with a worthy promise to keep telling the stories.” Elizabeth Lada Gray, 2015.
