Estella’s interest in photography sparked at an early age when she began engaging in the Art of portraiture photography, using her friends and family as both models and mentors. During college she created sophisticated studio based photographs and was awarded top marks receiving a certificate of excellence both years, as well as gaining entry into ‘Art Rage’ and the RACT Youth Portraiture Prize; a handpicked exhibition comprised of Tasmania’s best young artists. Her interest soon grew into a passion for the medium and over the last two years she created her first major collection ‘The Cultural Thread’ a collection of works based around westernized, stereotypical perceptions of exotic culture, exhibited in Launceston’s Gallery Pejean in 2015.
Having travelled extensively throughout Europe, Estella has gained an insight and understanding of culture as well as being exposed to world-class art. These experiences have and continue to influence Estella’s work.
Estella’s works are aesthetically extravagant, full bodied and abundantly colourful. They allude to traditional stylisation while keeping their contemporary sophistication. Estella carefully assembles her sets from scratch to create a realistic yet embellished portrayal of ideals on culture, religion and myth. All objects used in her works are somehow symbolic of the cause and strategically placed throughout the photograph to create a visually harmonious image fraught with intent.
