Junko Go was born Shiga, Japan in 1955. She migrated to Australia 1992 and now lives and works in Greens Beach on Tasmania’s north coast.
Junko`s paintings are an intensely lyrical expression of being, or in her own words “what it is to be human”. With spontaneity as a driving force, she presents an eclectic cast of naive human figures and animals subsumed in patterns. Her paintings are characterised by a lightness of touch, a cunning sense of colour and an inventive use of shapes and marks. She takes an unusual approach to new works, going against tradition to first compose a title for a work, then devising a way to convey the words visually.
Junko was the winner of Tasmanian Art Award (2001 and 2002) and finalist in the Glover Prize (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2014) and being highly commended in the Glover Prize (2011). Her work is included in numerous public collections and private collections nationally and internationally.
