Katina Gavalas

explores identity through the form of the dress

About

“My work explores my identity through the form of the dress. My aim is to reveal the mutable nature of the cultural self, revealing both the ingrained cultural memory and constantly evolving nature of identity. Ancient and contemporary female images connected to social dress and cultural rituals reflect my Greek heritage and are placed amongst my family heirlooms and mass produced fabrics from a variety of cultures to evoke memories of nostalgia and commemorate a new sense of belonging.”  Katina Gavalas, 2015
