Michael Weitnauer

Uniquely depicting landscapes in both the representational and abstract form.

About

Michael Weitnauer is a notable artist who has built a reputation for uniquely depicting the Tasmanian and Australian landscape in both the representational and abstract form. His work is constantly evolving as he pushes the boundaries of his painting practice. He belongs to a respected group of contemporary Tasmanian artists whose works are constantly in demand and whose reputations are growing nationally and overseas.

There is a deliberate connection between the artist’s representational work and his abstract work – they sit on the same plane. At one end of the ‘landscape-abstract continuum’ we have the discernible/recognizable image, while at the other end we find a gestural reference that provides an inkling or some sense of the landscape experience. The juxtaposition of representational paintings with the abstract works serves to highlight and enhance the different ways we can experience and express the real world.

In the past twenty three years Weitnauer has held over 40 solo exhibitions and participated in more than 25 group shows around Australia and overseas. In this time he has won and been a finalist in a number of major art awards.

His paintings are held in private, corporate and institutional collections in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Singapore, Canada, USA and throughout Europe.
