Nana Bayer

“I grew up surrounded by Scandinavian design – simplicity, economy of lines, sturdy functionality. Adherence to these aesthetic principles produces cool and elegant work, but from early in my career I found aspects of the code limiting. I decided to focus attention on the natural world, on the constantly changing seasons and transitory aspects of the Nordic climate. Porcelain offered scope to play with vivid colors, novel patterns, and delicate forms – it’s the most responsive medium for elucidating my ideas in a direct way. Moving halfway around the globe to settle in Tasmania hasn’t disrupted my basic approach, which still centres on capturing and transposing the beauty of nature. (Thankfully, this is an area in which Tasmania excels.)”

Nana Bayer, 2015.
