Pat Brassington

Australia’s most highly respected and influential photomedia artist creating surreal imagery that blurs the boundaries of reality and fantasy, desire and repulsion

About

Pat Brassington was born in 1942 in Tasmania, where she continues to work and live today. She has been producing images for over 30 years and is considered one of Australia’s most highly respected and influential photomedia artists.

Celebrated for a unique aesthetic, Pat’s surreal images blur the boundaries of reality and fantasy, desire and repulsion. Dominated by the recurring themes of interior and domestic spaces and strange bodily mutations on predominantly female forms, Pat’s images rouse a sense of disquiet. They open up like a flower, gorgeous and dream-like, then morph into a psychological Rorschach.

Pat won the prestigious Bowness Photography Prize in 2013. She has been featured extensively in national and international exhibitions, including Á Rebours, a major survey exhibition at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art in 2012, which toured to the Australian Centre for Photography (2013), the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (2014) and The Devonport Regional Gallery (2014). Her work is held in numerous private and public collections.
