Stephen Lees

One of Tasmania’s foremost landscape painters with lyrical and beautifully crafted works

About

Stephen Lees, born in 1954 in Sydney, moved to Tasmanian in 1976 after visiting and falling in love with the cold, the mountains and the amazing landscape of the North-west coast. In 1981 he joined the first Masters intake at the Tasmanian School of Art, and since has taught painting and drawing and written reviews for the Mercury. Today his focus is on his studio practice and direct ‘Plein Air’ engagement with the Tasmanian landscape.

Stephen is one of Tasmania’s foremost landscape painters, his lyrical and beautifully crafted works are the seeds of an artist who has built a reputation on professional practice, technical knowledge and painterly ability. His works capture light and colour and are often constructed using a heightened vantage point to create the drama of an amphitheatre.

Stephen has been exhibiting his paintings as far back as 1974 when he was only 20. He won the coveted Glover Prize in 2005, was highly commended in 2008 and a finalist in 2010. His work is held in collections across Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Canada, Italy and the USA.
