Ian McFarlane

Specialising in studies of Aboriginal people from Tasmania's north-west region

Ian McFarlane has taught Aboriginal Studies at the University of Tasmania. He specialises in studies of Aboriginal people from Tasmania’s north-west region and has been a contributor to the ‘History Wars’ debates. He has published widely, with his best-known work to date is Beyond Awakening: The Aboriginal tribes of North West Tasmania, a history.

Ian’s latest book Van Diemen’s Land: An aboriginal history was co-written with Murray Johnson. Carefully researched, using the findings of archaeologists and extensive documentary evidence, some only recently uncovered, this important book fills a long-time gap in Tasmanian history.
