On the Origin of Art is Mona’s block buster exhibition for Summer 2016/17. It has been curated by four bio-cultural scientist-philosophers that are asking the biggest and most exciting questions about the origin of art.
Each curator has created ‘an exhibition within an exhibition’ in separate spaces across the museum, selecting works to support their position. The exhibition includes ancient and contemporary artworks from multifarious cultural sources including antiquities, paintings, works on paper, ceramics, textiles, audio visual and contemporary installations. The artworks and objects have been selected from Mona’s collection or loaned from galleries around Australia as well as public and private collections in the UK and Europe, the USA and Japan.
There have also been several important artworks commissioned for the exhibition including Dots Obsession – Tasmania by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
