Burnie Regional Art Gallery

The largest public gallery on the north west coast.

About

The Burnie Regional Art Gallery (BRAG) is in the basement level of the Burnie Arts and Function Centre. It has three main gallery spaces and is the largest gallery of its kind on the north west coast of Tasmania.

BRAG has an extensive annual exhibition program which compliments the subscription season for performing arts hosted at the centre.

The Gallery has a permanent collection of over 1 000 works mostly focusing on works on paper including prints by Australian artists Lloyd Rees, Sidney Nolan, Brett Whiteley, James Gleeson, Arthur Boyd and Ben Quilty.

BRAG also runs the biennial Burnie Print Prize which is an  acquisitive prize open to artists living and working in Australia. The Prize is jointly sponsored by the Burnie City Council and the Friends of the Burnie Regional Art Gallery. The prize money for the award has increased to $15 000 making it one of the richest prizes for printmaking in Australia.

The Gallery Gift Shop aims to assist, preferably Tasmanian, but also interstate artists, by showcasing and offering for sale their high quality art works. This includes beautiful ceramics, glass plates and jewellery, and textiles from hand made bags to intricately knitted children’s cardigans, vests and hats. We also stock locally-made pieces made from Tasmanian wood including sassafras, blackwood and Huon pine.  The Gallery Gift Shop stocks a wide range of commercial cards, hand made and silk painted cards, as well as books, music and poetry CDs, and in-house catalogues. From time to time we highlight the work of individual artists.
