Cradle Mountain Wilderness Gallery

Art, Experiences, Film, Installations and a glimpse into the Tasmanian story.

About

Sink into Tassie’s wild heart at Cradle Mountain and visit a gallery dedicated to celebrating Tasmanian stories through the expression of art. Recently redeveloped and busting with installations, exhibitions, displays and film, the gallery is a must visit when on the mountain.

The gallery boasts six beautiful expansive art galleries, a children’s room, a Tasmanian Tiger room, installations, a movie room and a fantastic shop full of Tasmanian art, craft and products.

The six galleries are dedicated to Tasmanian artists including the wonderful photographer Peter Dombrovskis. Current exhibitions are listed on the gallery website at www.wildernessgallery.com.au

  • The Tiger Room– artworks by David Hurst, Fyona Storer, Richard Onn, Darryl Rogers, Tom Hounslow, Barry Smith – sculptures in mixed media. Don’t be surprised if you hear the growls of animals coming from this room which conveys the history and mythology of the Thylacine and its road to extinction…
  • Peter Dombrovskis Gallery– a tribute to one of the world’s great photographers.
  • Children’s Room – Decorated with a mural by cartoonist, Jon Kudelka, this room is complete with a variety of activities to entertain including a Devil’s Den, books, puzzles and of course, space to relax.
  • The Dark Room – a nod to the history of the gallery, this room takes us back in time. It’s a mix of the old with a touch of the contemporary; make the mechanical swan fly, investigate our geology and explore a room full of bones, feathers and fur.
  • The Movie Room – Watch the incredible film about Peter Dombrovskis ‘Wildness’ by Scott Millwood. It is not to be missed.
  • Galleries Two, Three, Six, Seven and Eight – These galleries contain extraordinary work from our annual Exhibition Program which changes every four months. For details of the latest exhibitions please visit our website or Facebook page.
  • The Drawing Room – A place to draw. Take some time out to sketch, draw or write about your story or experience on the mountain and join the visitor gallery.
  • The Gallery Shop – The gift shop includes an array of Tasmanian made products, arts and crafts, books, toys and curiosities. Surrounded by a massive art installation, this is also a space to spend time in and explore.

“Cradle Mountain is a unique and spectacular location.

The Wilderness Gallery has added another dimension to the visitor’s experience of our wild world.”

Senator Bob Brown 2003

Wood fires keep the galleries toasty warm, while the adjoining gallery shop is an inviting place to take respite from sightseeing and bush walking. Visitors can browse and buy photographic prints, fine craft, art and design from both emerging and established Tasmanian artists and designers.

With honey tastings and a gallery shop bursting with Tasmanian arts, crafts, produce and design, visitors will experience a taste of the true local culture. Drop into the adjacent hotel for a whisky tasting or enjoy a meal in the restaurant. All are welcome to visit us in the gallery. Entry is $5 per person or free if you dine and/or stay at Cradle Mountain Hotel or Cradle Mountain Café.
