The McLachlan Studio near Deloraine is the design studio of artists Hugh and Mary McLachlan. Situated in a park style garden on the banks of the Meander River it is the perfect setting for their creative life designing and making unique jewellery and sculpture. They work across the two platforms of jewellery and sculpture, each informing on and enriching the other and creating art that is conceptual and contemporary in both form and idea.
After training as Gold and Silversmiths at RMIT Melbourne, Hugh and Mary established McLachlan Studio in Tasmania in 1980. Their beautiful and elegant jewellery, all made by hand combines gold and silver, pearls and precious stones. McLachlan Jewellery has been bought and enjoyed by women for over thirty years and is represented in numerous private and public collections including the National Gallery of Australia Canberra.
Hugh McLachlan enjoys working in metal, whether jewellery or the sculpture he creates – small and large scale works in highly polished stainless steel. This polished surface is highly reflective and allows Hugh to explore the nature of reflection and illusion, how light plays with our perception of the world, of changing states from solid to liquid. Hugh’s sculpture has been selected for numerous interstate exhibitions, has been acquired for private collections and is represented in galleries both in Tasmania and interstate.
Hugh and Mary invite you to visit their Studio when in Tasmania – to try on their jewellery and perhaps choose a piece, something special that will hold significant memories, something that can be worn everyday and that will last forever.
