The inaugural Henry Jones Art Prize Exhibition will be open to the public from 7th November, showcasing exciting new work from Tasmania’s finest rising contemporary artists. A huge array of artwork from all our finalists will be exhibited and available for purchase.
Exhibition will be open from the 7th – 18th November 2018, daily from 9am-5pm.
Location: The Henry Jones Packing Room & IXL Atrium, 25 Hunter Street Hobart.
In 2004 when Henry Jones opened its doors – the first dedicated Art Hotel in Australia, it had been re-imagined on the site of the derelict IXL Jam factory and warehouses – a fusion of art, architecture and heritage. The site next to the Tasmanian School of Creative Art on the Hobart Wharf had been home to makeshift art studios, and when the hotel was opened its connection to the school and Tasmanian artists continued to grow by showcasing no less than 400 artworks at any one time throughout the revitalised historic space.
This has proved to be a fantastic platform for new artists to launch and develop their career, having artwork carefully curated to shine amongst the brilliance of Tasmania’s established artists. The hotel’s gallery space, The Packing Room, hosts art exhibitions around the calendar, changing every two-three months and providing a space for local artists to display large bodies of work and interact with visitors who seek authentic and engaging experiences of Contemporary Tasmanian Art.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to purchase artworks and vote for their favourite, with the artist of the most popular work receiving a $1,000 framing prize from Wagner Framemakers.
