Against the Dark

New works by emerging artist Rebecca Robinson

A photographic exhibition exploring our collective relationship and understanding of visual symbols.

Following in the tradition of psychoanalysis, Carl Jung asserted that many of his patients displayed an uncanny repetition of ideas and motifs within their thought processes. He reasoned that ever-present symbols had been passed down genetically, one generation to another, as humankind’s ‘collective unconscious’.

Inspired by this observation, Against the Dark by emerging artist Rebecca Robinson brings together a thoughtfully assembled series of antique vernacular photography. Each image illustrates base visual archetypes that play upon ideas of inherited symbolism and allude to an enduring system of communal language that is familiar and yet set apart from our consciousness.
