Figurative art in oils, watercolour and collage, this solo exhibition by Arjan Kok plays with elements of the mundane and the personal, isolating them as icons to elicit the viewer’s subjective response.
“I love it when the mundane things I come across seem to have an ineffable significance. I feel that this is what visual art exists to express- things we can’t put in to words. The process of art making places these elements into a dedicated, consecrated space for contemplation. I have an instinctive, direct approach, rooted in the traditions of the western canon and techniques. I make it to see what comes out. I love the tension of brush tip. No preparatory drawing, just a struggle to depict the motif in front of me, or a search to find shapes in an empty surface. Emotional responses to the world around me crowd in and out. I become obsessed with the wrappings and detritus of our throw away, material culture. I hoard them in my studio and eventually try and find a setting where they might mean something to someone.”
