Carbon Landscapes

Carbon drawings of emotive Tasmanian landscapes by Martin Rek

This collection of landscape drawings is Martin Rek’s first solo exhibition and his introduction to Hobart as an emerging Tasmanian artist.

“For me, drawing is the purest form of expression where focus can be given to subtleties of light, texture and tone without distraction of colour”
– Martin Rek

Originally from the Czech Republic, Martin now calls Tasmania home and has found inspiration amongst the rugged and evocative Tasmanian wilderness.

Martin often thinks of his drawings as portraits. His work has underlying human expression. Sometimes it is contemplative, in a relaxed state, even nostalgic. Other times it speaks of struggle and resilience.

“Mood is the most defining thing in my landscapes. Ultimately, mood is what I’m trying to capture through stylized mark making
and subtle light modulation”
– Martin Rek

Martin hopes the audience will discover their own personal connection within these Tasmanian landscapes.
