Hannah Blackmore’s fluid, luminous and cool structural depictions of iconic Tasmanian scenes are a refreshing new approach to this genre.
“I love painting seas and skies, and work with a fairly limited palette which mainly consists of cool neutral tones. I am currently exploring negative space around an image, by using areas of sunlight or ‘white’ to create this. I love photography and composition, which I think comes through in my work. I also strive to evoke a sense of calm within the viewer.” – Hannah Blackmore
I grew up on the English Channel Island of Jersey, and have always loved island life. After completing a foundation course in Art and Design, followed by a Fine Art Degree in Cheltenham, UK; I continued to paint and commuted to London to complete a nutritional therapy degree. However, Jersey eventually pulled me home (some say it is the magnetic pull of the granite it is built on) and I returned to live on the island for a few more years, before making the departure to Tasmania in 2012….
I have exhibited fairly frequently over the years, either as part of a group or alongside my mother, who is also an artist. I have also completed numerous commissions, for individuals as well as corporate clients. My style has developed considerably over the years and I look forward to seeing where it will go next.
After moving here, I immediately felt settled, as there are a lot of similarities between Tasmania and Jersey. Good food and produce, stunning landscapes and a great sense of community spirit being just a few! I find the environment most inspiring and feel lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world.
In April 2015 I became part of the Salamanca Arts Centre and moved into Studio 242 upstairs. It has been wonderful being based in such a vibrant arts community such as this. Do come by some time and say hello!
