An exploration of the terms, phrases and conventions that accompany the language of Printmaking.
Hunter Island Press (HIP) is a not-for-profit organisation with our primary objective to establish and operate a professional public access print studio in Hobart. The studio provides a place for artists to create work and pass on their skills to the community.
Printmaking is a fascinating medium that encapsulates a range of processes, methods and mediums. It is common for printmakers to have a collegial membership, formed naturally around the printing press. The printing press has a long tradition of being a shared resource, due in no small part to its size, function and expense. Printmaking itself has a long and proud tradition as an art form in it’s own right.
As in all collegial memberships, there is a shared language. Edition. Bon a Tier.Proof, and Unique State. There are also many terms that apply to printmaking mediums. Lino cut. Wood cut. Drypoint. Chine Colle. In the exhibition of Editions ; An Illustrated Glossary of Printmaking, Hunter Island Press will bring these terms alive in visual representations of the myriad possibilities of print.
