ex astris, ad astra : from the stars, to the stars

The first solo exhibition by emerging artist Emilie Llewellyn Simons

About

“At my core and foundation is astronomy and astrology. I have been fascinated by astronomy and the night sky since I was quite young, and I have been inspired by astrology since I began seriously studying it in 1998.

The language and study of astrology is rich, symbolic, archetypal, divine, and mathematical. It’s far more complex than the standard star sign horoscopes most attribute to astrology.

Finding connections between astronomy and astrology, between literal and symbolic, between science and spiritual, is what I feel drives me to question, explore, and examine. This is what shapes my thoughts and my approach in trying to understand what it is to exist.

In an attempt to explain these connections, and the thoughts and ideas I have, I find words to be limiting. I prefer the use of symbols, colours, patterns, shapes, numbers—the visual, as a much more accurate and layered approach.

Although astrological and spiritual themes form the basis of my visual storytelling, my hope is that my art can stand outside any particular beliefs, or disbeliefs, and instead focus on the images and the symbolic stories I’m attempting to convey—what it means to exist on planet Earth, in our solar system, and as part of this universe.”
