Per Mare (By Sea)

New works by Katherine Cooper featuring a selection of Bass Strait and Sub-Antarctic wildlife

About

The exhibition Per Mare (By Sea) by SAC Resident Artist Katherine Cooper features a selection of Bass Strait and Sub-Antarctic wildlife – diving gannets, gentle albatross, the magnificent King Penguin – a snapshot of species co-existing in these waters.

“From the shores of my Island I look out across the sea to the distant horizon that is Bass Strait.  My Island relies so much upon the Strait’s ever- changing moods.

Strong winds are common here, gales are frequent and I try and imagine the sea crossings of years before, many of them ill-fated, as I look out the window of my warm living room.

Island life has taught me many things but, most importantly, respect for our environments on land and sea and a passion for the creatures that share those places.

Per Mare (By Sea) concentrates on Bass Strait and Sub-Antarctic wildlife – diving gannets, gentle albatross, the magnificent King Penguin – highlighting what we stand to lose if changes are not made.”
– Katherine Cooper

“What we must do is encourage a sea change in attitude, one that acknowledges we are a part of the living world, not apart from it”
– Dr. Sylvia Earle, Marine Biologist
