Plastic Apocalypso

This exhibition is by the Tasmanian Gothic painter Elizabeth Barsham.

About

Plastic Apocalypso is an exhibition by Elizabeth Barsham,  notorious originator of the Tasmanian Gothic painting style. An environmentalist, she blends local history, social comment and personal experience in her critique of humanity’s impact on the Tasmanian landscape. Her well made oil paintings show sublime colour and description of volume in crisp, harsh light. Sharing the precursors of Surrealism, she builds on Bosch and Grunewald by blending human and animal form, recreating nature for her own purposes. The works are surprising, delightful, and witty  at the same time as repellent and grotesque. Her unique vision is entirely Tasmanian but nevertheless has a much wider global relevance.
