Psychescape

New works by emerging artists Emma Pridmore

About

“Everything you can imagine is real”
– Pablo Picasso

“The work is a response to the psyche, reshaping and presenting reality. Psychological perspectives are considered, representing ourselves as both isolated and holistic. These works explore ideas around the human experience in connection with our surroundings.

Layering suggests multiple influences on the mind in context. Creating windows, barriers and bridges. The treatment of paint is sometimes controlled and deliberate and other times raw and emotive, communicating the conscious and the unconscious. Biological motifs have been adopted and children’s drawings used to introduce ideas of the human body and creative mind. Patterns can be viewed as behaviorist, or as a connecting fabric. These formal elements work to create a sense of biosurrealism.

Human beings question, like to make sense and give reason. Struggling with my own mind and sense of place, these paintings provide an outlet for playfulness and curiosity without the need for answers. As the child of a psychiatrist and a mother trained in psychology, I found the images in medical texts curious and now find their familiarity grounding.  It is no surprise I find myself considering the psyche in context and enjoying its paradox.”
