RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize at Salamanca Arts Centre

A diverse and exciting portrait exhibition by young and emerging Tasmanian artists

About

This exhibition showcases the shortlisted portraits produced by aspiring and emerging Tasmanian artists, aged 30 and under. Their subject is a Tasmanian who has influenced them in some way. Every year this exhibition attracts diverse, experimental and interesting work that challenges the viewer’s idea of portraiture. The prize is open to artists across many disciplines, who work in a range of media including digital, painting, drawing, textile and photography.

This year the quality and diversity of work has increased and we welcome our three accomplished judges that represent a range of experience and expertise; Carla Fletcher, an award winning Melbourne based artist, Yvette Watts, artist and academic at the School of Art and 2015 winner of the RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize, Alasdair Doyle.

The Tasmanian Portraiture Prize aims to foster the development of emerging Tasmanian artists and provide an opportunity for the public to appreciate the talents of these aspiring Tasmanians.

The major winner will receive $5 000 and a trip and accommodation for two to Sydney to view the Archibald Prize. The runner up receives $2000 and the Packer’s Prize and Sponsors Choice receive $500 each. The exhibition will tour from the Long Gallery, to Sawtooth in Launceston and onto the Burnie Arts and Function Centre. Throughout the tour visitors are invited to vote for their favourite portrait. The People’s Choice winner will receive $500 and the successful voter randomly chosen will receive a free IPAD. All voting is undertaken within the galleries.
