The Lucid Shell

Maria MacDermott

About

Opening Thurs 26 Sep, 6pm
Exhibition runs Fri 27 Sep – Sat 19 Oct
Open Tuesday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday 11am – 3pm

The Lucid Shell presents paintings and sculptures by Maria MacDermott that explore ‘being and nature’ as a means for conveying experiences of reflective interiority.

She says, “There are expansive experiences – such as in relation to the sky and water. And there are intimate experiences – linked to that which is diminutive and particular, such as in relation to plants and shells. Moving back and forth between these various modes of experiencing is at the heart of this exhibition.”

MacDermott’s small scale sculptures are almost tentative in their ephemeral materiality. They speak of a fragile stillness through collaged cut-out paper imagery combined with wooden toy blocks, and motifs of shells and plants. MacDermott’s paintings reiterate the shell and plant motifs, and further explore notions of containment and emission through referencing the house, and air/water motifs. These works investigate themes of encapsulation, growth and death.
