The Naturalist’s Footsteps

Nicola Dickson re-traces Labillardière's steps from the 1790's D'Entrecasteaux expedition.

The Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts is hosting an exhibition by Canberra artist, Nicola Dickson.

The naturalist, Jacques Julien Houtou Labillardière, was a member of the D’Entrecasteaux expedition which spent seven weeks exploring and mapping the area surrounding Recherche Bay in 1792 and 1793.

Labillardière collected thousands of plant specimens and published a remarkable account of his observations and interactions with the local area and its people.

Nicola Dickson visited south eastern Tasmania in 2016 to re-trace the steps of the naturalist. The works in this exhibition try to capture this experience, informed by imagining past events and by a sense of place.

This project was supported by ArtsACT project funding.
