Walking Shadows : Bal Maidens & Brisons Veor

Emerging Artist Belinda Casey explores the trace of Cornish Bal Maidens upon the Cornish and Tasmanian landscapes

Walking Shadows : Bal Maidens & Brisons Veor is a series of mixed media works on canvas, the culmination of an Artist’s Residency at “Brisons Veor”, Cape Cornwall, in the United Kingdom, from 24 August 2019 to 7 September 2019.

These works are a visual exploration of the traces of the lives of the “Bal Maidens” (“Bal” meaning “mine” in Cornish), women who worked for the Cornish Tin Mines during the 18th and 19th Centuries, through the representation of their “Gooks” (bonnets) and shoes upon the Cornish landscape.  The exhibition also investigates Cornish emigration to Tasmania in the late 19th Century and these women’s trace upon the Tasmanian landscape.

It also imagines the Artist’s imprint upon both the Cornish and Tasmanian landscapes and questions: are our hats and shoes all that will remain of our lives in one hundred years hence?
