Bookbinding Workshop at Kickstart Arts

Learn to make hand-bound books with 2 or 3 sections.

Welcome to Kickstart Arts’ Creative Exchange: Sharing Skills and Culture.

Title: Bookbinding

Description:  These beautiful small books make great gifts, especially when they are made by you!  Using decorative papers and book cloth, you’ll create a selection of small books with external stitching on the spine.

Firstly you’ll decorate the paper and then move on to make the book covers, fold sections, and stitch several different designs on the spines of 3 sizes of books (A5, A6, A7).  These are great as gifts, or as notebooks for your own use.

What you’ll get:

  • At least 3 books of your own creation

  • First hand book binding experience

  • Printed notes so you can make more books at home

What to bring:

  • A notebook and pen

  • Apron or clothes you don’t mind getting dirty

  • Bring a 30cm metal ruler and pencil if you have one (optional)

About the Facilitator:

Pru Quarmby has been making books and teaching hand-binding techniques for over 15 years.  She has sold her creations at Salamanca Arts galleries, and at various markets and fairs including Deloraine Craft Fair.

There are so many techniques to learn to produce so many different styles of books – artists’ books, journals, family histories, limited edition books, and theme books for children, just to mention a few.   Watch out for more workshops in the future!
