Amazon and other sources tell you to just upload your Word or PDF document and they will convert it for you – but it’s not that easy if you want to make a professional looking ebook. While novels are less problematic in their formatting to non-fiction books, you need to know how to edit your ebook, so it looks the way you want it to – not the way the computer decided.
This course is designed for authors with technical skills who want to learn how to manage their own ebooks, or people who want to learn how to help authors convert their ebooks.
There are many tools available to help you create ebooks – this course will look at using word processing software, Calibre (free) and KindleGen (free) to create professional looking ebooks with minimal fuss. The course will cover:
Setting up your initial document to make conversion easy – this includes the need to apply Styles to the document and remove troublesome formatting.
Converting and editing your book in Calibre – participants will learn how to use the Calibre editing tool to customise formatting in their ePub file, guaranteeing a more professional appearance.
Converting to mobi – the final step of converting your ePub to Kindle’s mobi format and checking your book.
The course will include tips and tricks, and issues to look out for when finalising your ebook uploads.
Participants must have good technical skills for this course. If you don’t already understand the basics of applying Styles in Word, or struggle with technology, this is not the course for you.
Participants must download and install the latest versions of Calibre and KindleGen prior to coming to the course – these are free tools you can easily find.
Participants must have a Word document or Open Office document ready to format and play with on the day.
