[Creative Exchange] Poi Twirling Workshop

A lesson in traditional Maori performance art.


Welcome to Kickstart Arts’ Creative Exchange: Sharing Skills and Culture.

Session Title: Poi Twirling

Description: Originating from the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand, poi twirling a great way to socialise and have fun, plus it will also help you stay fit and healthy in body and mind.

The session will take you through the basics of plane and angle, timing and movement. If you have ever wanted to dance with fire, the use of Training Poi is a great first step towards using Fire Poi!

About the teacher:
Rochelle Cusiter is an experienced performer, musician, teacher, choreographer and dancer of 20 years, holding a Bachelor of Music.
She has worked extensively in the entertainment industry, touring nationally and internationally at festivals and venues, specialising in fire dance and teaching poi workshops.
She is currently part of The Hobart Fireflies a professional fire-twirling troupe that incorporate a multitude of fire instruments, dance and music into spectacular performances.
